I’ve always loved X—formerly known as Twitter. Since 2010, it’s been my go-to social media platform for its chaotic, judgment-free energy. Raider Nation Twitter? Pure freedom of speech gold. Three handles later, I landed on @baroquemedusa, dedicating it to writing (though I can’t resist the occasional Raiders or crypto tweet). While many jumped ship for Threads or Bluesky, I stayed.
Dear X: I’m Not Going Anywhere
In the last month, Bluesky’s rise has caused another exodus, but I’m not budging. Sure, Elon has implemented new rules—whatever those are—but I couldn’t care less. X has a fresh wave of “book marketers” and authors filling my feed now, and let me just say: it’s been… something. The marketers spam DMs (does anyone even read those anymore?), and the “authors” (yes, I’m doing air quotes) have turned the timeline into a motherfucking pity party.
It Seems Authors Are a Bunch of…Bitches?
Here’s the thing: I’m a self-published author too, and I get it—writing is hard, sales can be slow, and reviews can sting. But do we need to air every complaint on social media? These are the common tweets I’m seeing:
- “If you’re still here and not leaving for Bluesky, please follow me!”
- “Another slow month of sales.”
- “I can’t believe I got a bad review on my book!”
Let me break it down. My last self-published book was the first one that sold more than two copies, and I celebrated like I’d won the motherfucking lottery. Got a bad review? That’s called an opinion—welcome to the real world where participation trophies are not handed out. Complaining about these things doesn’t move the needle, it just certifies you as a bitch.
Authors on X: A Reality Check
I’m starting to wonder—are all authors like this, or is it just the ones left on X post-Bluesky exodus? I’m leaning toward the latter. Writing is about resilience and creativity, not whining on social media for validation. If you’ve got time to complain, you’ve got time to write.
So here’s my advice: Stop bitching. Start writing. And for the love of all things literary, shut the fuck up.
